101-Kilometre Malamma–Rigan Gabas Road Opens New Pathways for Economic and Social Development
ICCO-delivered road improves connectivity, supports local commerce and strengthens access to essential services in Kano State
The successful completion of the 101-kilometre Malamma–Rigan Gabas Road in Warafa Federal Constituency represents an important investment in the social and economic development of Kano State.
Constructed by International Consolidated Contractors Ltd. (ICCO) for Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, the project was awarded on 20 October 2019 at a value of approximately ₦23 billion. The road was completed in summer 2022, with the Ministry certifying that the works had been completed satisfactorily.
Beyond its considerable engineering scope, the project provides essential infrastructure capable of improving everyday life for communities along the 101-kilometre corridor. By strengthening road connectivity, it facilitates the movement of people, agricultural produce, commercial goods and essential supplies between communities and nearby economic centres.
Supporting Local Trade and Agriculture
Reliable road infrastructure is essential to the growth of local economies. The Malamma–Rigan Gabas Road offers farmers, traders and small businesses a more dependable transport route, helping improve access to markets and supporting the efficient movement of goods.
For agricultural communities, better road conditions can reduce transportation difficulties and help limit delays in bringing perishable produce to market. Improved connectivity also expands commercial opportunities by enabling businesses to reach a wider customer base and facilitating the movement of construction materials, equipment and other supplies.

Improving Access to Essential Services

The completed road also supports emergency response and enables the more effective delivery of medical supplies, educational materials and other essential goods to communities along the corridor.

Enhancing Safety and Resilience
The project incorporated extensive drainage, erosion-protection and road-safety works designed to improve the reliability and long-term performance of the route.
The works included concrete pipe culverts, open drainage channels, reinforced-concrete drain covers, stone masonry, erosion protection, bridge structures, guardrails, road signs, delineators, kilometre markers and approximately 102.5 kilometres of road markings and studs.
These components are vital to managing surface water, protecting the road from erosion and providing safer conditions for motorists and surrounding communities. Concrete-tile footways were also constructed to improve pedestrian movement in applicable areas.
Environmental measures included grassing and the planting of 720 local trees, complementing the project’s wider infrastructure works.
Delivering Long-Term Community Value
The project involved substantial construction activities, including more than 1.5 million cubic metres of excavation, approximately 410,000 cubic metres of subbase and road-base materials, around 166,000 cubic metres of crushed-stone base and approximately 765,000 square metres of double-surface treatment.
